“Golden Majesty”
Painting #2 in the Open Trail Series by Katy Smith
Johnson Ranch Trail, San Luis Obispo, CA
5”x7”, Daniel Smith Fine Watercolors on Arches 140lb Cold Press
The Story Behind the Painting:
I named this painting “Golden Majesty” because of the striking color of the grass along the trail set against the majestic oak trees in the distance. The hike I took at Johnson Ranch Open Space in San Luis Obispo was filled with beautiful vistas of the rolling hills of the Central Coast of California. This particular spot where the trail takes a quick turn to the West was both a turn of direction and a figurative turning point in my hiking journey. I quickly went from hot and weary from hiking in the open, sun-drenched grassland to being cool and sheltered under the canopy of oak trees. I love trails that have a destination and this one did not disappoint. Meandering through the valley at the midway point of the trail is a small, rocky stream. I took several minutes to cool my feet in the stream that runs under the foot bridge before finishing the second leg of this loop trail. I will certainly be returning here to paint again.
