Kalmia Gardens

This piece was partially painted on the grounds of Kalmia Gardens, which was then completed indoors from photo reference. The location where I painted is part of Kalmia’s thirty-five-acre property in Durham, CT, which is a venue for the arts. The farmhouse depicted is where the organization frequently holds concerts of classical music. I was struck by the beauty of the setting sun in the late afternoon and found the location to be a good vantage point for capturing the light on the side of a building. I worked with oils on a canvas which was toned yellow in order to allow for additional warmth to come through in the finished painting. The process of creating this piece proved to be a great exercise in capturing light and shadow in an outdoor setting, in addition to being an enjoyable experience.
